Taking care of your precious plants during winter is not a simple task. You have to prepare the garden and make sure everything is ready for low temperatures. Well, no matter how you try, some plants cannot survive winter outside.
So, if you already planted the whole garden without consulting a professional, there is a great possibility you have some of those plants that require a lot of attention and special care.
Rosemary
This might surprise you, but rosemary is not as tough as it looks. This is a wonderful herb, but it needs a lot of attention. It rarely survives frost, so there are some things you can do to make sure you always have that pleasant smell in the garden.
Before the winter comes, depot your rosemary plant. Use a plastic pot and move it inside. This is the only way to be sure it survives winter. Late August or beginning of September is the perfect timing for changing the place of your plant.
If you forgot to depot the plant, make sure to water it regularly. It needs to be moist all the time. Also, make covers to keep it warm and add some mulch on the soil to keep it moist.
Delicate Trees
With the term delicate, we cover most young trees. They are the ones most likely to freeze during the winter, so avoid planting them in the summer. Instead, plant your tree in the early spring. This way, it will have some time to adapt to the soil.
Also, one of the most delicate trees is the Citrus tree. If the winter is stronger, it probably won’t survive. That’s why it needs special attention. You need to ensure that the temperature around the tree is always a little bit higher. So, mulch and plant cover will do a good job, but aside from that, you need to keep the optimal moist. Citrus trees require a lot of work during the winter, but in the end, it will all pay out.
Tropical Plants
Your tropical plants require a lot of attention during the winter, that goes without saying. You have to understand that they are not made for snowy weather and they need sun and warmth. So, it’s on you to provide them with a lot of light and ensure warm covers.
Larger tropical plants, like hibiscus and angel’s trumpets, are even harder to maintain, so if you are living in a place that has harsh winters, our advice is to avoid planting them. But, if you already planted one of these summer beauties, then keep them trimmed and covered every night with a safe cover.
Annual Plants
Crabgrass, petunias, and snapdragons are just a few types of annual plants that have very little chance of surviving the cold temperatures. That is the main reason why it’s always recommended to collect seeds from them since you will probably have to replant them in the spring. Of course, if you take good care of your annual plants, or hire professionals to do that for you, they will have a good chance of surviving the winter.
